Community Assistance Fund
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation provided SEO with $400,000 to establish the SEO Community Assistance Fund (CAF). This innovative “re-granting” project allowed members of the SEO family to learn about 9/11-related needs in communities of color and make grants to New York City organizations working to address those needs. Nearly fifty SEO alumni and students participated on four CAF committees over the course of the project. Each committee developed its own set of funding criteria, reviewed proposals, conducted site visits at organizations, and collectively made decisions on the allocation of grants. Participants gained valuable experience as they learned about local community issues and the practice of strategic philanthropy. SEO was thrilled and grateful for the energy and dedicated involvement of all CAF committee members.
