Two SEO Students Awarded New York Times Scholarship
SEO Scholars Program 12th graders Dextina Booker and Guillermo Malena were two of the eight New York City high school students named New York Times Scholars in February 2011! Each year the New York Times selects a handful of expectional high school seniors, who have overcome tremendous personal challenges, for the prestigious $10,000 a year scholarship.
As the story goes with so many of our SEO Scholars students, Dextina and Guillermo have had to overcome significant obstacles — financial, personal and academic — that at times made the dream of going to college seem unattainable. After spending more than 700 hours in SEO’s rigorous academic classes on Saturdays and after school, both Dextina and Guillermo have ensured that the limits of their New York City public high school wouldn’t become their personal limits as well.
